HMG – While Reese Witherspoon and former Brokeback Mountain star, Jake Gyllenhaal are officially over and done.

Insiders say the split really happened two weeks ago, while Reps for both sides kept denying reports. They’re not denying them now.

“They needed time to figure it out, and they were on different coasts,” says one snitch. “When they were finally together, they soon chose they’re not going to be anymore. There are no other people, it just fizzled out.”

Rumors have also been floating that the problem was Jake wanted marriage, and Reese got frightened off. A source close to the couple says those rumors are fake.

The sparks of a romance initially flew between Jake and Reese during shooting for the 2007 movie, ‘Rendition,’ The former couple have no scenes together, but spending six weeks in the rarefied air of a high-pressure film set can make you reckon anyone’s hot.

But don’t panic, kids – our boy’s not a quitter; Reports say Jake who will turn 29 next Saturday sent Reese, 33, a small token at Christmas – $75,000 of vintage French dinnerware for her home in Ojai, CA. He’s also sent e-mails and flowers.

“He isn’t giving up without a fight,” a friend tells In Touch.

So the courtship continues. And if anyone can make a second time work, that guy would be Jake. We’ll keep you advised if Reese changes her mind…
